Lighting design and its effects on mood, vision

If you haven’t given much thought to how the lights in your home or workplace are laid out, now’s the time to get with the programme!

Our knowledge of the effect of lighting on mood, vision and performance is increasing all the time. Add to this an increasing desire to make our homes and businesses more energy efficient, and you can see how the layout of our lights is becoming an exact science.

There are many factors to consider in a lighting renovation – and I won’t get into them here (I can feel another post coming on!) – but if you’re searching for a good place to start your research, I have found that the government-run EECA website gives a great overview. These are the guys behind the ‘Energy Spot’ TV segments and you can find their lighting design section here. Take the time to have a look around the rest of the lighting section too, there’s some great descriptions there of the different kinds of lighting available today.
